    Greener Synthesis of Poly-1,3-Isobenzofurandione-4,7-diphenyl
    (2018-04-15) Trainer, Nicholas
Poly(P-phenylene) is an organic polymer that has semiconductive properties. Organic semiconductors are becoming increasing utilized material in electronics nowadays due to them being a more environmentally friendly alternative to the standard inorganic semiconductors. This polymer will be synthesized via a Diels-Alder reaction between 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene and maleic anhydride followed by subsequent dehydroaromatization to the resulting terphenyl compound. A bromination will add functionality to the terphenyls to allow for an Ullman homocoupling or Suzuki polycondensation in order to form the desired polymer. The first reaction produced moderate yields (~60%) of 4,7-diphenyl-3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-2-benzofuran-1,3-dione and a purification has been conducted to mostly remove the starting materials. The product has been oxidized using two different methods to provide minimal results. Further optimization must be conducted to the previous reactions to produce more significant yields before further steps are conducted. The remainder of the synthesis can then be conducted to finish synthesis of the polymer.

United Methodist Polity & 21st Century Post-Fordist Capitalism in the United States
(Florida Southern College, 2018-04) Schreiner, Bailey
I contend that there is a material connection between the value structures found in both Christianity and capitalism. Historically, this connection has been treated as static. This treatment is unfair because it has led to reduced criticism and imaginative thinking about economic systems and United Methodist polity. I also acknowledge that unawareness of this dynamic relationship has led to some harmful changes in the value structures of both Christianity and capitalism; the fallacy of misplaced concreteness is a classic example. The value structures found within Christianity can beneficially inform capitalism, and vice versa. No true progress can be made by talking about Christianity and capitalism in strictly abstract terms, so I will focus on United Methodist polity and businesses that operate within 21st century post-Fordist capitalism in the United States. To do so, I will provide a brief history of both United Methodist polity and capitalism in the United States to provide adequate context and connect a few of their historically-shared value structures: abundance over scarcity, innovation over traditionalism, and connectionalism over self-interest. Then, I will explain how each field has deviated from these value structures and propose practical solutions for each to improve upon their positions. Before I do that, I must verify that the roots of capitalism’s value structures do, in fact, reside in Christian history.

The influence of HUMAC training on balance and range of motion in an Achilles tendon repair patient: A case study
(Florida Southern College, 2018-04) Harrison, Nicole; Terrell, Sara Lynn
A tear or rupture in the Achilles tendon may require surgery and extensive rehabilitation to fully recover. Balance training is an important aspect of rehabilitation of an Achilles tendon repair. The HUMAC balance board system provides multiple training programs as well as balance tests to utilize in a therapy program. Although, the influence of a 10-week HUMAC balance board training intervention on balance and range of motion (ROM) in an Achilles tendon repair patient was unclear.

The Effect of Post-Identification Feedback Evidence and Peripheral Trial Information on Jury Decision Making
(Florida Southern College, 2018-04) Donovan, Peter; Quinlivan, Deah S.
Post-Identification Feedback (PIF) is a phenomenon that occurs in the criminal justice system following an identification of a suspect when a lineup administrator gives witnesses information regarding their decision. PIF can impact witnesses’ retrospective judgments about what they saw, such as certainty (Steblay, Wells & Douglass, 2014), making mistaken eyewitnesses appear reliable. PIF is problematic, but it is possible that if jurors are able to recognize and understand the influence PIF has on eyewitness certainty, they can alter the extent to which they use that witness’ testimony in their decision-making. Already, researchers are recommending that jurors be allowed to see videos of eyewitness identification procedures in case PIF has occurred (Kassin, 1998; Steblay, Wells, & Douglass, 2014). However, the authors of this study believe that these videos might create a secondary transfer of certainty; that is, a juror who sees an eyewitness being told they chose the correct person might be more erroneously certain that the eyewitness is correct. To test whether jurors are able to recognize the impact of PIF on an eyewitness, this study utilized a 2 (no feedback vs. feedback) x 2 (no instructions vs. instructions) x 2 (trial type: eyewitness only vs. all info provided) variable design. Participants, who took on the role of mock-juror, were asked to read half of a trial transcript, watch one of two randomly assigned eyewitness identification videos, finish the rest of the trial transcript, and then make verdict decisions and answer questions about their perceptions of the eyewitness.

A Survey of Parasites from Anolis Lizards on Andros Island, Bahamas: Do Ecomorphs Host Similar Parasite Assemblages?
(Florida Southern College, 2018-04) Brittain, Kaitlin; Langford, Gabriel J.
The Anolis lizard ecomorphs of the Caribbean and Bahamian islands are a well-established example of both adaptive radiation and convergent evolution. However, due to a lack of parasite biodiversity surveys on these islands, it is unclear if the parasite fauna hosted by these lizards follow similar evolutionary pathways. This study attempts to determine if the parasites hosted by Anolis spp. display strict host specificity, which would indicate speciation events in-step with their hosts, or if the parasites have little specificity and are broadly distributed among the various lizard species. In 2015 and 2017, lizards were captured by hand and dissected as soon as possible after capture in three locations on Andros Island, Bahamas. First, an external exam was conducted to look for ticks and mites, then blood smears and fecal samples were taken to search for blood protozoans. Parasites and hosts were preserved and brought back to the Parasitology Lab at Florida Southern College. Preliminary results found the ground-trunk lizard, Anolis sagrei, to host nearly all species of parasites found in this study, whereas the treetop lizard, Anolis smaragdinus, hosted relatively few parasite species. We propose that this pattern is due to the parasites intermediate hosts being ground-dwelling insects which would be more likely to consumed by ground-trunk lizards. Overall, our findings suggest that the parasites of Anolis display moderate levels of host specificity, thus some species may have speciated with their hosts, while others are generalists.

Can the Functional Movement Screen be Used as an Assessment Tool for Improving Movement Patterns in Collegiate Dancers?
(Florida Southern College, 2018-04) Barnes, Elise; Terrell, Sara Lynn
The Functional Movement Screen is a common tool used to assess fundamental movement patterns. Results from the screening process can influence exercise program design. FMS screening is not as commonly used in dancers as other sports. Information regarding how dancers could benefit from a structured training program based upon FMS remains unclear.
